Portuguese Language Immersion in Porto
Known as 'O Porto' to the Portuguese, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was the European Cultural Capital in 2001. Located on the river Douro, the impressive Dom Luís I Bridge is notable and provides a beautiful view as you approach the city.
Porto is vast and monumental.It extends from the Câmara Municipal (Town Hall) at the northern end of the wide Avenida dos Aliados to the riverfront Praça da Riberira, however the core of the city is concentrated and can be explored on foot.
The old city is located on the banks of the river and is very colorful. It has many little markets, cozy cafes and family-run restaurants. Across the river, you can view the old wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia and the two decks of the colorful old Dom Luís Bridge. Outside the old city, you will find a very lively and prosperous commercial city.
There is much to see outside of Porto. Póvoa de Varzim, 28km north of Porto, is an old and important fishing port which in recent years has become an elegant and popular sea resort.
The towns of Rio Mau and Rates, have very interesting architecture and beautiful churches and Monte S. Félix, with its windmills converted into houses and beautiful panoramic views of the coastline.
