Japanese Language Immersion in Fukuoka

Some things to see and expeience in Fukuoka

Momochi District
Say "Momochi" and most people think of the beach area of the same name, but it actually refers to a district to the west of Fukuoka's downtown area. This is not just any district; it is the wealthiest and most scenic in the city. The area is still being developed, and has numerous empty lots, but already there is the Fukuoka Tower, the public library, several museums, gorgeous avenues and walking areas.

The Fukuoka Dome
The Fukuoka Dome resembles something from a futuristic movie set, having been the first retractable-roof stadium in Japan. Now it is home to the Daiei Hawks professional baseball team. The Dome is particularly impressive at the end of the day when the setting sun reflecting off the roof's metallic surface adds a touch of magic to the Momochi district.

Tochoji Temple
Although founded in 806 by the scholar-priest Taishi Kobo, giving it the longest history of any temple in Fukuoka, the Tochoji Temple is housed in mostly modern buildings and gives the impression of being a place of active worship. Inside the main hall, you will find an 11-meter, 30-ton daibutsu (Buddha statue). Other noteworthy objects include the tombstones of the lords of the Kuroda clan, examples of calligraphy by the artist-priest Sendai, a thousand-handed statue of the goddess of mercy (designated an important cultural asset), and the calligraphy of the temple's founder, Taishi Kobo.

Canal City
Canal City revolutionized the shopping and entertainment industry in Fukuoka. This multi-level complex basically has everything: dozens of brand-name stores and small shops, many restaurants, a multi-screen movie theatre, a Sega amusement theme park, two hotels, banking facilities, an art theatre, business offices, showrooms, and even regular street performers. In the Sun Plaza, located in the center, some of the performances are by extremely talented professionals and may include acrobats, magicians, or musicians.

Hakozaki Shrine
This is one of the three great Japanese shrines dedicated to the Emperor-divinity Hachiman, and a place where Japanese have come to pray for success ever since the shrine's dedication in 921. A number of important cultural treasures are housed within the shrine's precincts.

Nagahama Park
Located toward the end of Oyafuko Street is this tiny park where your night may begin--if verbal talents are in fine order. While people often choose it as a meeting place, the park is more commonly know as a "nanpa" (pick-up) spot at night. Girls decked out in their most attractive clothing sit in groups, waiting for friends or guys to offer an invitation somewhere.

Our Japanese language immersion allows you plenty of time to discover the culture of Japan & Fukuoka.

Arrival airport: FUKUOKA
Fukuoka has an international airport (FUK) located about 10 minutes from the center by subway. If travelling by air you should expect to connect in one of the many Asian airline hubs: Seoul, Hong Kong or within Japan. Tokyo is 1.5 hours, Seoul 55 minutes.

Transit at Kansai airport (Osaka)is good and has the added advantage of bringing you in at the Fukuoka domestic terminals. Travel within Japan is expensive, so we would suggest connecting from outside of Japan, however there are direct flights to most major airports in Japan and most minor airports in Kyushu.
